Francesca’s Fundraising for a New School in Nepal

A 21st century school, run by and for the local community

My Dearest Friends,

I am in Melamchi, Nepal, to work on the construction of a new community school which will provide a quality education for impoverished kids who's school was destroyed in the 2015 earthquake.

The 450 kids here are amazing and I have been helping run workshops and organise activities between the heavy construction work I've been doing...

More details below, and thanks in advance for your kind support!

For many of us access to primary education seems like a given, but for the children of Nepal, it is not at all. Today you can make a real and tangible difference to 450 children, and help them get an education buy supporting AOKC to build the first of its kind, state of the art, community driven school. By support East Point Academy you will radically change the lives of an entire region of Nepal for years to come.

Why are we building this school?
East Point Academy was founded 12 years ago aiming to provide quality education to marginalized kids, but was tragically destroyed during the 2015 earthquake, along with 25,000 other schools which affected 1.7 million children.

Following the disaster, East Point Academy set-up temporary classrooms using bamboo and metal sheeting to be able to continue to educate pupils. However, the makeshift situation is no longer a viable solution and children now urgently need your support, to help create a better, safer, quality environment for them to receive an education.

AOKC engaged with EPA to support construction of a permanent school that will be earthquake resistant and serve the community long term.

The vision is to make EPA the best affordable educational institution in the area so every child can have access to quality education and get a chance to break the cycle of poverty they were born into.

Who does the school help?
The 450 students are a mixture of different castes and ethnic groups with around 7% from the lowest caste who are considered ‘un-touchable’ in Nepali culture. The kids are between 2 and 15 years old covering the grades 0-12 as well as Nursery.

How will it be managed in the long run?
EPA operates as a ‘non-profit trust’ with the objective to provide low cost education to marginalised children. For those who can’t afford tuition fees, scholarships are available to cover both academic costs as well as on-site accommodation if children live in a remote region where daily travel is too challenging. This is funded by the families who can afford to pay tuition which means the school can continue operating it’s community driven model, but also ensure donors and stakeholders that there is no unfair financial motivation for the management of the school.

How do I know my donation will make an impact?
The Acts of Kindness Collective operates a 100% model. This means that we raise money for any overheads separately, so that 100% of your donation to a specific campaign can always be guaranteed to be spent on that project.

Our £500 challenge
All donors helping us with £500 or more contribution will forever be remembered in the local community as we will create an art piece on the school grounds and write everyone's name as a reminder of all the kind hearts that helped us make this a reality.
